A short lesson this week, still working on “active rhythm guitar” ideas. This is a chord movement that you can use over a dominant chord that we sometimes hear in horn backgrounds and keyboard parts in blues, funk, gospel and other styles. One thing to try is to record yourself or make a loop of yourself playing a simple bassline in A and then slowly play these chord shapes over it. Listen to how each chord relates or feels over the bass note and if they create tension or resolution. I especially love using this idea over funky bass lines. Enjoy!
